Born and raised in Bismarck, North Dakota, Dr. Nate Lighthizer, OD, FAAO, is a Pacific University College of Optometry graduate. Upon graduation, he completed a residency in Family Practice Optometry with an emphasis on Ocular Disease through Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry (NSUOCO). Dr. Lighthizer has since joined the Oklahoma College of Optometry faculty and serves as the Chief of Specialty Care Clinics and the Chief of Electrodiagnostics Clinic. In 2014, he founded and now heads the Dry Eye Clinic at the College of Optometry.  Also, in 2014, he was named the Director of Continuing Education and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Care Services at the Oklahoma College of Optometry. Starting in 2020, he was named the Associate Dean of the NSU Oklahoma College of Optometry. Dr. Lighthizer is a founding member and currently serves as Immediate Past President of the Intrepid Eye Society, a group of emerging thought leaders in optometry. He was named a member of PCON 250 – A list of the top 250 optometrists in the country who practice progressively, provide innovative patient care, conduct optometric research, excel in academia, and share what they have learned with other optometrists to advance the profession. Dr. Lighthizer lectures nationally and internationally on numerous topics, most notably advanced ophthalmic procedures, electrodiagnostic, and ocular disease.

Glaucoma, often called the “silent thief of sight,” is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. More than 3 million people in the United States have glaucoma. The National Eye Institute projects that this number will reach 4.2 million by 2030, a 58% increase in the next six years!  Experts estimate that half of people with glaucoma don’t know they have it. Combined with our aging population, we can see an epidemic of blindness looming.

Join us as Dr. Andrew Tran presents cases and reviews the common glaucoma diagnoses and treatments available and how you can help manage glaucoma and glaucoma-suspect patients.

Dr. Andrew Tran is an ophthalmologist at the Wellish Vision Institute in Las Vegas, providing comprehensive medical and surgical care for adults. Dr. Tran specializes in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating patients with glaucoma and cataracts.
After earning his Medical Degree Cum Laude and a Master of Business Administration at SUNY University at Buffalo, Dr. Tran completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he served as residency morale chief. He then completed a fellowship in Glaucoma at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He has also served as an instructor at the University of Texas, teaching residents basics and advanced techniques in glaucoma and cataract surgery.
Dr. Tran has lived in various parts of the country, including California, New York, New Mexico, Pittsburgh, and Dallas. He has a working knowledge of both Vietnamese and Spanish. In his free time, Dr. Tran enjoys playing the piano and cycling. He enjoys spending time with his family, friends, and chihuahua, Spotty. Dr. Tran is excited to enjoy the warm weather, great hiking trails, innovative culture, and friendly people in the Las Vegas area.

NOA Member Greg Koenig, OD, is seeking re-election to the Nevada State Assembly seat in District 38, covering Fallon, Fernley, Hawthorne, Tonopah, and Yerington. Dr. Koenig grew up in Fallon, raised his family there, and still lives and practices there today. He also has practices in Fernley and Yerington - both part of District 38.

First elected to the Nevada Assembly in 2022, Dr. Koenig’s first session in the Nevada Legislature was in 2023. He was instrumental in helping get the NOA's bill passed during this session. The Nevada Optometric Association is fortunate to have one of its members among Nevada’s 63 total legislators (42 in the Assembly and 21 in the Senate), and we want to help him keep his seat in the Assembly. The Nevada Optometric Association is endorsing Dr. Koenig in his legislative run and encouraging fellow optometrists and all NOA members to do the same.

Dr. Koenig could use financial support right now with his campaign. Candidate filing for state legislative seats runs from March 4 to March 15, 2024. It is possible that Dr. Koenig will draw an opponent again this cycle. Political campaigns cost money and get more expensive every year. This time will be no different, so we hope you will join us in supporting Dr. Koenig as the NOA and Nevada Optometric PAC host a virtual fundraiser via Zoom on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, at 7:00 PM.

We hope you can join us for this unique opportunity to speak with a member of the Nevada Legislature who, just like you, is an optometrist. Dr. Koenig understands what it means to run a practice, have employees and patients, and manage a business all at once. Your concerns are his; he can be our voice in Carson City. Please take advantage of this opportunity to meet with a fellow NOA member who represents you in our state capital.
